Web-based Inquiry Science Environment
The Web-based Inquiry Science environment (WISE) is a powerful online platform for designing, developing, and implementing science inquiry activities. Since 1997, WISE has served a growing community of more than 15,000 science teachers, researchers, and curriculum designers, as well as over 100,000 K-12 students around the world.
WISE provides a simple user interface, cognitive hints, embedded reflection notes and assessments, and online discussions, as well as software tools for activities such as drawing, concept mapping, diagramming, and graphing. WISE can also incorporate interactive simulations, models, and activities built in a variety of technologies including Flash and Java (such as those developed by the Concord Consortium).
As students work collaboratively on WISE projects, all of their project work is stored in a database, which is accessible to teachers and researchers for purposes of assessment. A teacher portal supports teachers as they make use of WISE, providing tools for classroom management, and student assessment. The WISE authoring environment provides tools for creation and customization of curriculum projects.
