SURGE Assessment Goals, Measures, and Instruments
Assessment in SURGE will involve standard experimental design in terms of random assignment of participants within classrooms across experimental groups. In addition, SURGE will conduct formative quantitative and qualitative analyses of student learning during development/pilot-testing phases.
We will assess students' physics understanding using a version of the Force Concept Inventory (FCI). The FCI is a highly regarded, normed, and validated assessment of students' understanding of Newton’s laws and surrounding force concepts. In addition, SURGE will use subscales from this instrument augmented with appropriate NAEP and TIMSS items to conduct formative assessments of the specific interventions under development during development/pilot testing.
SURGE will also measure students’ self-efficacy, problem-solving ability, and motivation. We will measure students' far transfer problem-solving ability and problem solving persistence using traditional measures such as the "Tower of Hanoi" and other proven measures of problem solving. Finally, SURGE will measure the inherent enjoyability and engagement of the game itself using our own Student Motivation Composite.
We will augment our quantitative assessment with microgenetic mapping of students' understanding and conceptual change processes as they engage with the environments. SURGE will map the processes through which students revise and integrate their tacit intuitive understandings of the core Newtonian mechanics into larger formalized explicit knowledge structures.
